Lean On Navy
3 min readJun 7, 2021

WOW! All you podcasters who listen at 1.5 speed.. . . not this one! This Lean On Session you’ll be looking for the .75 speed option!

Admiral Barrett’s video cuts out, but her words are clear, conversational, and cut-throat hilarious! Put this on during your commute to get a GREAT start to your day! Link here.

Formal introduction begins at minute 6:30.

Each take-away below had a colorful story with it, but here are some of my highlights:

*Not just “change for change:” focus on “Transformational” change.

*Be a “pied piper” for other’s ideas

*Gather ideas from diverse groups

*Be the last one to speak at an idea generating session

*Think VISION and ART OF POSSIBLE, promote a wild imagination

*Example of Walt Disney who imagined Disney World in swampland

*Talk about RISK with your chain of command

*Weed out the “agents of resistance” and the “007s of NO”

*PET THE CAT! Develop your influencers and let your appreciation be felt and heard.

*Give the die hard institutional resisters ONE SHOT. Then, let them GO!

*Focus on WHY, not HOW

*Throw away CHANGE GARBAGE

*Be a wolf: ears open, mouth closed

*Beware the GOOD IDEA FAIRY!

*Allow for failure

Rear Admiral Danelle Barrett’s bio is extensive, and you can read it here. Most notably, she was the Director, Navy Cybersecurity and Deputy Chief Information Officer, and is the author of “Rock the Boat: Embrace Change, Encourage Innovation, and Be a Successful Leader.”

Moderator: CAPT Emily Bassett, USN

When it started to settle in that this COVID thing was not a short-term speed bump, but rather a new way of life and of work, CAPT Emily Bassett knew she had to do something. Connection with fellow leaders is her fuel, and keeps her life in perspective. The more stories she hears, the more common she realizes all of our experiences are, and despite all our unique circumstances, we can find a way.

What makes Lean On so special is that it brings leaders of all experience levels together where we can learn from each other. While this is a group where you can have mentor/mentee discussions, the real value is in the connection among all of us. No matter our rank, the more vulnerable we all are, the more we share about our individual lived experiences, the more we connect across the Navy.

**HOW DOES IT WORK: This is a Virtual “Lean On” Professional development circle. I’ll moderate the introduction and group discussion. We’ll break into small group “break out” rooms, and we’ll end by discussing as a group. It’s an hour to invest in our own professional development and in each other as we connect and learn from one another!

This is informal — show up from home or from work, in your PT gear, or in your uniform. Have a cup of coffee or a glass of wine! My only request is that this be the ONLY thing you are doing for this hour. If this time ends up being no good for you, no problem, I record them! Just watch the link, or catch the next one! The best GIFT you can give us is your attention. And, it’s the best gift you’ll receive, when someone in your circle LISTENS to you. That’s the real secret sauce of these circles.

***Please forward widely, to fellow women leaders you want to welcome to a Professional Development (PRODEV) learning circle. Primary focus is senior or “interested-in-being-senior” women leaders in the Navy or Marine Corps or somehow “connected” to the US Navy or USMC. Men interested in contributing to the conversation, curious to learn from a “women in the workplace” perspective are welcome (and ENCOURAGED!) to join!*
